The call was scheduled at 9 am. I plugged my headset in the phone but forgot to put it on my ears. So, I missed the HR's call on 9:02 am.
At 9:07 I drafted a mail to tell her, Hey HR, I'm all set for the call. but before shooting the mail I checked my fone. And called her. ( The earlier Milan might have started panic, as if he has done something terribly wrong)
MP - Hi, Crystal. Good Morning. I'm Milan.
HR - Morning Milan. We had scheduled the call today. Are you still interested in joining with us?
MP - Yes. It's just my fone. I couldn't hear the ring.
HR - It's alright. Let's start the interview.
MP - Yes, Please.
HR - You're referred by your Friend. how do you know him?
MP - I was working in the same city of India - Mumbai as he. And last year, one of my colleague introduce me to him as he was also planning to go to the same University. SUNY Binghamton. So, I know him for last one year.
HR - Alright. What has he told you about our Company? About his work ex or culture here?
MP - He just joined the Company 2 weeks back and I did not get chance to speak with him. So, umm... I don't know.
HR - Okay. What do you know about our company?
MP - Oh yes. I searched online and I learned that the Company makes mortgage experience better for its customers. So, I - being a CS person can use my skills to help the company achieve its goals.
HR - That's exactly what we do. Okay, tell me about yourself.
MP - Well, I'm Milan from CS. During my study I like the courses of Algorithm, Design Patterns, Data Mining. I did a project of Time Series Prediction for the Data Mining Course. And in the next semester I'm taking Machine Learning course - which is what I'm excited about. Before pursuing Masters, I was working at Oracle Financial as a Staff Consultant.
HR - Yes. I see that in your resume. What was your job role?
MP - My duties were development and maintenance of Oracle's retail banking product - Flexcube. Flexcube is - when we visit any bank and we see tellers are using their computers. They are using software like Flexcube.
And I got a chance to be part of 2 projects - 1. TD/ RD - Term Deposit / Recurring Deposit APIs ans 2. Bill Payment by third Party.
This bill payment can be by cash, check or account transfer. This project was developed by me. And to do so I utilized existing functionalities of cash deposits and cash withdrawals. Once I understand the requirements, then I only have to pass the data in the suitable format required by existing code. So, It was quite a learning experience for me. I got a chance to understand business requirements and use my tech skills to implement it.
HR - That's nice. So, What was the toughest part of your job?
MP - Usually issues happens because of miscommunication or lack of details. In my project where we had to post payment on third party, We were using third party - Tax Revenue Authority's APIs. In Production the connection from Bank's Flexcube to third party's network was agreed to be done via https - in a secured way. However UAT environment doesn't have https connection and we keep sending requests for payments but could not get acknowledgements. so, to troubleshoot the issue was the toughest part.
HR - And, how did you resolved that?
MP - We printed logs of the request flow and observed that Flexcube successfully sends the request but Third party cannot receive it. So, get the concerned person from their network team and they were expert. So we could resolve it. Other tech issues were not tough as I had knowledge about them.
HR - that's very nice of you to bring this network issue as a toughest job.
And you said you are also interested in Data Mining jobs as you have done some project in it.
MP - yes.
HR - Okay, Milan. Are you willing to relocate? The company is located at "this place"
MP - yes.
HR - then pay stuff and any other questions---
